Engaging PureMusic Audio Playthrough introduced an occasional stream of glitching sounds to enter the playback chain of MacMini, Resonessence Labs Herus, REDGUM RGi60 and Zu Soul MKII. Investigating what PureMusic could do to lift Plastikman’s EX – which already sounds mighty fine in lossy format – was a short-lived affair. Instead, PureMusic hijacks the audio feed as per Pandora’s web browser audio stream. No way to tell Spotify that it’s gotta talk to DPad first. Simple enough for everyday users but for power users looking to introduce third party engines like PureMusic’s DPad it comes up short. Without the ability to specify an audio output device from within Spotify’s desktop app it fires ones and zeroes at whichever hardware device is specified in OS X’s system preferences. DPad routed audio is a smidge smoother, a soupçon softer…but that’s all she wrote. PureMusic definitely brings something to the party but with my headphone rig – LHLabs GeekOut firing into Audeze’s LCD-X – the gift is small. With Pandora playing inside Google Chrome, A/B-ing between PM Playthrough and direct-to-DAC in OS X’s sound output device selection menu becomes a single-click affair. Selecting Channel D DPad as the default output device in OS X’s system preferences and then engaging ‘Audio Playthrough’ (from PureMusic’s MusicServer drop down menu) is simple enough signal metering shows the user when PureMusic is handling playback processing. More troubling was PureMusic’s tendency to crash on exit upon which freshly applied settings were lost.Īn email to PureMusic’s tech support team on 14th June received no reply. This kinda bugs me but it isn’t a deal breaker. The former launches the latter and you can expect to iTunes to remind you of its presence each time PureMusic starts up as well as each time it quits. This brings us to my first niggle: decoupling PureMusic and iTunes just isn’t possible. ![]() PureMusic must be restarted to apply any such changes. Inside Playthrough’s software settings a hardware DAC can be specified. The Channel D website explains it thus: “Playthrough permits conveniently playing other computer audio sources (Internet radio, movies, etc.) through Pure Music, with full access to Pure Music’s dithered volume control, 64 bit crossover, audio EQ plug-ins, NetSend streaming, metering, etc.”ĭPad must be installed from within PureMusic’s audio setup options panel. DPad can also intercept audio played back from the web browser – hello Pandora radio. I took the 15 day trial versions of 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 for a spin.īundled inside the main app is the DPad plug-in which installs a virtual output device on your Mac through which any audio can be routed and – therefore – improved. Ahead of its release I thought I’d take a closer look at its main competitor: Channel D’s PureMusic (US$129). That coverage was somewhat Windows-centric with the final mention going to the forthcoming Amarra SQ, software that promises OS X users an audible improvement with ANY music application, not just iTunes. I recently detailed several ways in which to connect better software playback engines with Spotify and Qobuz. Time to remind ourselves that the mastering quality is as (if not more) important than the delivery format. Spotify sates more (theoretical) casual listening via 320kbps Ogg Vorbis but it too can still sound downright impressive. ![]() Renting access to CD-quality music is big news. With Qobuz and WiMP lossless streaming services up and running we now look to the cloud as a source of music. In 2014, we no longer consider only locally hosted libraries, accessed via an iTunes database. Whether it’s been a showroom demo or a home audition not once have I been unimpressed with the amelioration brought by each of these pieces of software. Spend a few hours with any of these applications and you’ll find returning to iTunes running solo a most unsatisfactory listening experience: it will likely sound flat and lifeless in comparison. They each retain iTunes’ library management system but at the click of play digital audio is handed off to the third party player where lower system overheads and RAM pre-loading solicit an uptick in sound quality. ![]() Computer audiophiles using Mac OS X will likely be familiar with the Channel D’s Pure Music, Sonic Studio’s Amarra and Audirvana+ – all alternatives to iTunes’ own playback engine. ![]() Adding color to each instrument or group of instruments makes things not only more fun to look at, but also helps your brain understand the structure of your project more and spend less time trying to find particular parts when there are a lot of tracks. ![]() Now this is for those with a bit of OCD but also wants to make their projects look more fun. Customize track colors, icons and instrument groups Once everything is set up, adjust the amount of reverb by tweaking the “Bus 1” This is the most important tip in regards to CPU efficiency.ģ. Once you understand this concept, you can create multiple reverb Aux channels with different types of reverbs on each one, so if you want a reverb with a lot of distance and tail, you can put that on it’s own Aux channel and just use that on instruments that need a big ambient reverb, for example. So rather than all 100 of your instrument tracks playing 100 reverbs (which is a nightmare for your CPU), you have 100 instrument tracks playing 1 reverb at the same time. ![]() Then you can create 100 tracks (more or less) and route every single one of those tracks to the same reverb bus. There are a few ways to do this, but the simplest is to create an “Aux channel” within your Mixer window, then add a reverb to that channel (make sure the dry% is 0 and wet% is 100 in the reverb settings, and low-cut most all reverbs). The first mistake many people make when making music in a DAW is to not utilize “buses and sends” to route reverb and effects through. Use buses for reverb & effects to save CPU Since this is a complex topic, I won’t go into too much detail here, but check out this quick video on SMPTE time codes that should help explain this concept more.Ģ. The general knowledge of this concept varies in the world of independent music and filmmaking, but professional composers and filmmakers are incredibly aware of SMPTE and how the music should fit together in-sync. Know frame rates & time codes when importing movies ![]() Of the more recent ones, I'm most familiar with Fleshport, which I've only played for maybe two hours because its action sequences were a little too stressful for my tastes - one of the reasons why I usually play CRPGs is that there usually isn't much time pressure and I don't need to be on the ball the whole time.Ī potentially interesting and underrated title I'd like to point out is Ruina: Fairy Tale of the Forgotten Ruins, an interesting RM2k game that plays more like a JRPG version of a TTRPG, with a lot of emphasis on dungeon exploration in the "roll X to find a hidden room" style most of us should be fairly familiar with. There are also a surprising amount of horror titles made in RPGMaker. While I would definitely sing the praises for both of these games' writing, I found the former a little too punishing for my tastes, while the latter is mostly a series of minigames chained together by (well-written) dialogue and plot. Then there is LISA, made in RPGMaker XP I believe, and of course the more lifesim/life adventure-esque Always Sometimes Monsters. Its First Seed Material figures and tilesets still make me nostalgic for that era of RPGMaker gaming. ![]() I still have yet to play the "enhanced" version though I did play the original (unfinished) 2k3 version intensely. I feel like a huge number of the RPGMaker games I used to enjoy back in the days of RM2k3 remained unfinished, but one of the gems from that era, Ara Fell, got a remake and a commercial release a while ago, with a substantial overhaul of UI and playability on modern systems. ![]() In context, you'll understand to what I'm precisely referring just keep in mind that you'll not see the term anywhere in-game. An "actor" in this case could be a creature, a vehicle, or even a tree. Osiris pack includes 100 animals, 20 tribes, 20 city civilizations and 80 space creatures. If I make mention of an "actor," I'm meaning an object of any given category. Further evolving Mohawk ‘s look, Baker added an expanded reptilian element to Mohawk ‘s appearance. One more thing: there is a single term I'm going to use that the game does not. Playing off of Walas’ character Stripe, Baker created his own unique Gremlin leader that payed homage to Stripe through subtle usage of coloring, attitude, and hairstyle. Honestly, once you get even the barest amount of practice in the controls, you'll be able whip out cool adventures in no time. The game does a decent job of showing you the basics, and-while this is admittedly a cliche-it's probably in your best interest to just mess around in a "test adventure" (don't bother sharing it) before trying a "real" one. Note that we will not go over basic controls. (We'll give you information on how to get the adventure at the end of the guide.) This means you'll see not only how the tools work, but how they apply to our specific adventure. Second, we'll explain how to turn those techniques from theory to practice as we show the creation of an adventure. First, we'll describe some of the advanced tools and techniques used to craft an adventure exactly how you want it to be crafted. This section of the guide will be oddly broken up, and show you two aspects in one. That is, while anyone-even someone who hasn't touched the game before-can jump into the Creature Creator and make something interesting or cool, it takes at least one or two practice sessions and a knowledge of how the game "ticks" before you can make an adventure worthy of being shared. ALWAYS NAME YOUR CREATONS WHEN SAVING or you may lose them after closing/crashing Spore Q: Why can’t I share my creations online It’s not. It’s overall just awesome if you want to make cool. That said, creating an adventure is a bit more complicated than creating anything else in the game. new abilities, new effects, invisible limbs, access to captain and cell parts, and so on. Like for the rest of Spore, the adventure creator tool is both powerful and subtle: you won't be able to make epic RPGs or completely overhaul the game engine, but the breadth of possibilities for an adventure is limited mostly by your own imagination. ![]() It probably goes without saying that the main draw of the Galactic Adventures expansion pack is not the Maxis-made adventures, but the myriad of user-created content and the tools with which to make them. Writing Dialogue & Placing Extras + Sharing the Adventure Setting Up the Storyboard and Goals + Setting Special Behaviors and Time Limits There are usually about four or five rows of lines. Lines are the rigging cords attached to different areas of the underside of the wing. However, it's climbing quickly in popularity. Extremely popular in Europe, paragliding is still a micro-sport in the United States, with around 5,000 or so participants. Nevertheless, they're all based on Jalbert's original design. Paragliding equipment has evolved, with more complicated suspension and steering systems. This is considered the beginning of modern paragliding. In 1978, three friends in Mieussy, France used their modified parachutes to jump off a mountainside and glide to the ground, the first time it had been done. The shape allowed the wing to glide or float rather than immediately descend, as a traditional parachute would. As the sail caught the wind, air would "ram" into these cells, filling up or inflating the sail. The parachute - called a wing or sail - was broken up into cells. Developed by Domina Jalbert in 1964, the ram-air parachute altered the shape of the chute from round to rectangular. Also known as the parafoil, it changed everything. Hanggliding is faster so a bit more of an adrenaline rush while paragliding is better to take in all the amazing views and to enjoy the serenity of a bird’s eye view of the world.įor an ultimate verdict of which one is more fun we suggest you try them both! That would settle the question once and for all.The solution came with the invention of the ram-air parachute. Comparing them is comparing apples and oranges. Which is more fun, Paragliding or Hanggliding?īoth paragliding and hanggliding are heaps of fun. Typically hanggliders fly with a faster horizontal speed than paragliders. Hanggliders on the other hand, hang horizontally suspended and face-down underneath the hangglider. While paragliding you sit comfortably upright, in what many call the most comfortable seat ever. The main difference between paragliding and hanggliding is that a paraglider doesn’t use a rigid structure for its wing and a hangglider does. The difference between Paragliding & Hanggliding This head first, facing downwards position makes hanggliding a highly spectacular and adrenaline rushing activity. The hanggliding pilot, and co-pilot, are horizontally suspended underneath the hangglider while facing downwards. Steering and controlling the hangglider is achieved by shifting body weight. ![]() The pilot is attached to the hangglider through a suspended harness attached to the airframe. Most modern hang gliders are made of an aluminium alloy or composite frame covered with synthetic sailcloth to form a wing shaped aircraft. Hanggliders differ from paragliders in as much that they use a rigid structure for their triangular shaped wing. Hanggliding is a spectacular air sport or recreational activity in which a pilot uses a light, non-motorised foot-launched and heavier-than-air aircraft called a hang glider to fly. “Hanggliding is the sport of launching oneself from a cliff or a steep incline and flying through the air by hanging from a very small aircraft without an engine, consisting of a frame covered in cloth.” Steering and controlling the paraglider is done by applying the brakes or weight shifting within the harness. ![]() The wing shape of the paragliding wing is maintained by these suspension lines, While flying the wind fills the wing with air and this pressure together with the aerodynamic forces of the air flowing over the outside of the wing make a paraglider fly. The pilot, and the passenger, sit upright in a harness suspended below the wing, connected with vertical lines. The wing shape of the paraglider is paramount as it gives the paraglider the ability to use updraft winds and thermals to stay in the air for long periods of time. The wing has no rigid structure and can be folded and packed into a backpack. “Paragliding is the recreational adventure sport of flying or soaring from a slope or a cliff using a lightweight, free-flying & foot-launched wing with no rigid primary structure.”Ĭontrary to what many believe paragliding is not done with a parachute but with a so called paragliding wing. Rightfully so because they are both awesome bucketlist adventures which you have to enjoy at least once in your life, with the risk of getting addicted to them for life, just like us =)īut what exactly is the difference between paragliding and hanggliding? And which one is more fun, paragliding or hanggliding? They both emerged in the last decade as a popular hobby, adventure activity and competitive sport. Paragliding and hanggliding are the most popular recreational airsports as they are fun and easily accesilbe to anyone. |
